For contributions to cost-effective and secure cryptography

Abstract

IEEE is the world’s largest technical professional organization, the headquarter of which is located in the United States. Over 409,000 members in more than 160 countries, more than 60 percent of whom are from outside the United States. IEEE stands for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

IEEE has four membership grades, Student, Regular, Senior, and Fellow. Each year, following a rigorous evaluation procedure, the IEEE Fellow Committee recommends a select group of recipients for elevation to IEEE Fellow. Less than 0.1% of voting members are selected annually for this member grade elevation.

Cryptography is an important element to realize cyber physical security. Dr. Kawamura applied cryptography to consumer electronics such as DVD recorders, smart card systems, and a quantum key distribution system. He also proposed a parallel processing method of cryptography using a residue number system. He was elevated to IEEE Fellow with the following citation:
